As a Capital Carshare member, you may wish to add additional coverage above what we currently carry.
Please be aware that we continue to search for an additional policy available in New York State to increase coverage for our members above these levels. In the meantime, the following options may exist for our members to personally increase coverage if you have concerns with the reduced coverage options..
If you have an existing automobile policy on another vehicle in your name, check with your insurance agent to see if it will cover you over and above our new limits of liability ($25,000 bodily injury per person/$50,000 bodily injury per collision/$10,000 property damage per collision). Your agent should be aware that you have the option, via membership, of regular use of carshare vehicles. If your current company will extend over our limits and you have an umbrella policy, you will want to be sure that it will also extend.
If you do not have an existing automobile policy on another vehicle in your name, it is possible that you may purchase what is called a non-owned automobile policy that will protect you in the case of a liability claim in excess of Capital Carshare’s limits.
If you have a personal umbrella policy, it may cover you even further above a non-owned automobile policy, which could provide you with more than $1,000,000 of liability coverage (which is the liability limit Capital Carshare previously was able to offer members).
If you use a credit card with CLDI coverage to pay for your Capital Carshare trips, you may be able to use that to cover vehicle damage expenses only, including the first $500 that you are responsible for. Check with your credit card provider.
Give yourself extra peace of mind! The CarShare Damage Pool provides additional coverage for $30/year to eliminate potential deductible costs due to damage and/or an accident. Sign up anytime by logging into your account.
